It’s been almost 20 years since Siberia, a dive bar inside the 50th Street station of the 1 line, left its dwelling in the subway. (It later closed for good.) But now there’s a brand new place to drink close to the din of rumbling subterranean public transportation.

Merchants’ Gate opened in May at the Columbus Circle Station, a cleaner, buffed-up bar that dares you to neglect that you just’re in a subway station — a lot in order that patrons might depart their work baggage unattended at their high-tops to get a refill of Samuel Adams. No MetroCard required. Anyone, even these sprucing off their to-go meals from close by meals distributors, can stroll proper in. During a current go to, there was no bouncer to verify IDs.
